Two people have been arrested after a FexEx delivery man intervened a protest flag burning in Iowa City on Thursday, Jan. 26. Kelli Ebensberger, 21, of Iowa City, and Paul Osgerby, 23, of Ames, were arrested for open burning, which is a simple misdemeanor in Iowa.

A group of people gathered at a rally in front of the pedestrian mall in Iowa City, Iowa in protest of President Donald Trump and the Dakota Access Pipeline. In their efforts to show their anger, this group of individuals decided that they would light an American flag on fire to show just how mad they were.

The protesters gave the usual arguments about how burning the flag is protected under the first amendment right to free speech.  They are correct.  The Supreme Court did make a decision under Texas v. Johnson that protects flag burning under the grounds of free speech and reaffirmed that same decision a year later under United States v. Eichman.

Now with that being said, nothing is sure to piss off a red-blooded American faster than desecrating this symbol of freedom. These protesters forget that while they have the right to speech freely and that speech does NOT include freedom from consequences.

Others also possess the freedom to speak in response.

In the midst of the flag burning, the actions of these protesters caught the attention of a FedEx employee. Bystanders caught video of the FedEx employee jumping in and grabbing the flags, putting out the flames with a fire extinguisher. He scooped it up and used a fire extinguisher to keep protesters at bay when they tried to rip it out of his hands.

Officers saw protesters setting fire to a flag, and the group did not have a permit from the fire department for a fire, says the criminal complaint.

A bystander laid into the protesters for their actions of burning the flag, stating – “This shit is not how you unite a country.” Then one of the protesters brings up the Illuminati, stating – “You going to let the Illuminati run the world, man?”

As the FedEx employee walks back into in view on the video, he gets in a scuffle with the protesters.  One of the protesters tries to come up behind him and pull the flag away and the FedEx employee turns around, shooting the protester in the face with the fire extinguisher.

“Get out of here!” he shouts. “All you guys! Back off! Back off!”

Since the burning, many people have been expressing their gratitude toward the FedEx employee by posting to Twitter with the hashtag #FedExGuy.
