John Bernecker, who worked as a stuntman in Hollywood for almost 10 years, lost his footing while rehearsing a fight scene and fell off a balcony onto concrete about 25-feet below, according to TMZ. Bernecker suffered blunt force trauma from the fall and had to be airlifted to the hospital where he was placed on a ventilator.

The medical examiner revealed that the 33-year-old stuntman died in the hospital Thursday evening, TMZ reports. Bernecker was in the company of friends and family, including his longtime girlfriend who is a stuntwoman on the show, when his ventilator was turned off.

Production of the show stopped as soon as Bernecker fell, and it’s unclear when producers will start filming again.

AMC released the following statement regarding the young man’s death:

“We are saddened to report that John Bernecker, a talented stuntman for ‘The Walking Dead’ and numerous other television shows and films, suffered serious injuries from a tragic accident on set. He was immediately transported to an Atlanta hospital, and we have temporarily shut down production. We are keeping John and his family in our thoughts and prayers.”

Such a tragedy for him, but at least he went out doing what he loved. We could all only be so lucky.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to Bernecker, his family, and his friends on the set.
