People across the country have been finding coins inserted into the passenger door handles of their vehicles lately which seems harmless enough- but in fact it is something that you need to beware of.

Car thieves are always trying to find new schemes for getting into your car to steal your valuables, and this is the latest trick! According to Sun Gazing, there have been a rash of robberies using of all things, a penny or nickel! Whether your car is sitting in your driveway or a lot when you are shopping, the thief slides a nickel or penny in the door handle of the passenger side.

Then they follow you to wherever you are going. The coin holds the door handle slightly open, leaving it unlocked but you don’t know this since you are on the driver’s side of the vehicle. When you hit the button to lock it, the mechanism fails because the handle is jammed.

Then, once you leave the thief simply enters your vehicle, steals whatever they want and even steal your vehicle!

Sean Brown at Mad World News adds that it doesn’t work on every vehicle, but you can rest assured that if you find a coin stuffed into your door handle, you’re likely being followed and someone is going to try to break into your car. So, it’s definitely better to be safe than sorry, and it’s not going to hurt anybody to take a quick walk around the outside of their car to make sure they’re not about to become a victim of crime.

As always, we report stories like this to prepare people for what could happen when they least expect it. Granted, some would argue these stories empower criminals or give them ideas, but at the same time, I’d rather have people know what’s lurking out there so they can look for it, than have them get robbed unexpectedly or get carjacked at gunpoint. The thieves already know the tricks, honest Americans do not.
