New evidence has come to light against former IRS senior executive Lois G. Lerner, prompting two top Republican lawmakers to demand that the Department of Justice reopen her case.  Lerner was involved targeting tea party groups and obstructing an investigation due to losing key evidence in the case.

Lerner was cleared after an investigation by the Obama regime.  Lerner refused to answer questions, pleading the fifth when asked.  Yet Lerner gave testimony allowing the Congressional panel to hear her side of the events but allowing no rebuttal or cross-examination to take place.

Reps. Kevin Brady and Peter Roskam state there are plenty of questions regarding how the probe was run and they demand answers.  Under the Trump administration a new inquiry would be warranted they believe.  Both men are chairmen of the Ways and Means Committee and the panel’s tax policy subcommittee.

In a letter to Attorney General Jeff Sessions, they state –

Taxpayers deserve to know that the DOJ’s previous evaluation was not tainted by politics.

Lerner’s attorney, William W. Taylor, is having none of it.  He states Lerner was properly cleared of charges by the previous probe under the previous administration.

Ms. Lerner did not violate any laws. There is no evidence that she did and no new investigation will change that reality.”

The targeting of Conservative and Tea Party groups by the IRS came to light nearly four years ago, after Lerner planted a question at a conference that revealed that the IRS had been singling out these groups for intense and intrusive scrutiny. Prior to this event, IRS executive leadership denied any such targeting when asked by Congress.

Lerner played a central role in the investigation.  Republicans believe she was instrumental in orchestrating the targeting and released emails as evidence of such showing a serious amount of animosity towards conservative groups and the GOP in general. The exact role Lerner filled remains in dispute though due to her pleading the 5th and refusing to answer any questions in the Congressional investigation.

The Obama regime had a much different opinion, all but declaring Lerner a hero. They not only cleared her of wrongdoing but had the audacity to claim that she was actually attempting to “fix things” from the inside while becoming the first IRS official to notice something wrong.

Rep. Brady and Rep. Roskam have stated their committee’s own exhaustive investigation shows Lerner wielding undue influence, leading to improper practices that target conservative groups, denying these groups their right to approval for tax-exempt status.  She then compounded those misdeeds by giving  “misleading statements” to the inspector general, and said her use of a personal email to do some government business “risked exposing, and may actually have disclosed, confidential taxpayer information.”

According to the Washington Times

“After the May 2013 revelation of the targeting, President Obama called for an investigation. The Ways and Means Committee issued its official referral of Ms. Lerner to the Justice Department for a criminal investigation nearly a year later 2014.

Along the way, though, even as the probe was continuing, Mr. Obama asserted that there was “not a smidgeon of corruption” at the IRS.”

Reps. Brady and Roskham believe that this preempted any chance whatsoever for a fair hearing, even from their own employees, stating –

It is clear that when the DOJ announced in October 2015 that it would not bring charges against Lois Lerner, the agency was following President Obama’s signal on how he wanted the investigation to be handled.

It was then decided by Assistant Attorney General Peter Kadzik to not bring charges, claiming there was evidence of bad management and poor judgment, but neither of those constituted a crime.

There have been calls to impeach IRS Commissioner John Koskinen played a significant role in this entire debacle, however, Speaker of the House Paul Ryan failed to follow through stating it set a bad precedent. Koskinen’s term expires in November.

God Bless.
