WILLINGBORO — Barack Obama will have to wait to have a public building in the township named in his honor, after the Township Council voted unanimously Tuesday night to scrap renaming the Kennedy Center after the sitting president.

The 5-0 vote by the council reversed last month’s decision to rename the former high school-turned-community center after Obama.

The decision brought national media attention and sparked an outcry from many on social media and in correspondence with the media and officials, including alumni of the former John F. Kennedy High School.

The 155,000-square-foot building opened in 1965 as a high school to serve a growing community and closed in 1991.

More than 200 people showed up at the council meeting, which was held at the former high school gymnasium to accommodate the expected crowd.

During the meeting, the crowd waved Kennedy varsity jackets and signs declaring “I am a 1973 Kennedy Gryphon,” while chanting “No!” and “Vote it down!” before the motion to rescind the name change.
