Michael Phelps has now won his fourth gold medal of 2016, with a total gold medal count Phelps is the most decorated Olympian of all time.  He is extremely talented and has worked very hard to hone that talent to razor precision to create himself into the fish-like swimmer that he is.

Sadly, for all that hard work and dedication to honing his craft, excelling, and competing for his country will be repaid with a message from the United States government via the Internal Revenue Service.  Their message – Congratulations! NOW PAY UP!

If we assume Phelps is in the top Olympian income bracket – and that’s a logical assumption given his history – the IRS will slap him with a bill for the Olympics of a cool $39,600.  (Figure courtesy of Americans for Tax Reform – Brady Wilson) All because he DARED to be the best….to achieve personal greatness in his field….to bring honor to his country! HOW DARE HE!!  The horror!

The U.S. Olympic Committee recognizes its medalists with $25,000 for gold, $15,000 for silver, and $10,000 for bronze. But the IRS considers these amounts to be regular income, subject to taxation.  A gold medalist from Team USA could end up facing a tax bill of $9,900 per gold medal, $5,940 per silver medal, and $3,960 per bronze medal.

It’s a sad day when doing your very best at something, achieving the pinnacle of your aspirations and dreams, and aspiring for greatness are penalized.  I guess that’s what happens when everything is reduced to a participation trophy.  Phelps put in the time, dedication, sacrifice, and hard work – yet for some reason he didn’t earn that according to some or some hate him for his achievements and want to diminish them by taking from him as much as they possibly can as a result.  It’s little better than glorified Communism under a different banner and it’s no wonder that the IRS is one the most, if not THE most hated government entity to date. It’s little better than glorified Communism under a different banner and it’s no wonder that the IRS is one the most, if not THE most hated government entity to date. Redistribution of wealth at its finest, a killer of dreams, and it penalizes Americans for hard work and success.  Who among you was raised with the ideology that if you work hard enough and excel, you can make something of yourself and achieve greatness. I grew up with this ideology and clearly so did Michael Phelps.  That’s the American Dream in a nutshell. But this nonsense? Penalizing success and celebrating mediocrity? THAT is one of many reasons why we are declining as a nation.
