While none of us on staff or among the readers is naive enough to believe this story is unique, it is one worthy of repetition.

While one Congressman from California has introduced legislature to rob us of our right to self-defense, this 73-year-old woman in Georgia defended her property and herself from additional damage and harm from a careless burglar and did so successfully.

Hilda Douglas of Linburgh, Gwinnett County, Georgia was enjoying a relaxing evening at home when she noticed a suspicious truck parked outside her home. At around 10 o’clock that night, rather late for Georgia visiting, her doorbell rang. Wisely, she did not answer the summons but called the police and heard a window break. Next, she sent herself to her bedroom from where she retrieved her handgun and waited for developments.

The intruder entered the house armed with apparently only a flashlight. He then proceeded up the stairs and headed to the closed-door bedroom. When he started to turn the knob to enter, she took aim carefully and shot one round. She hit him in the chest.

The burglar screamed in pain, fall then get up again. She followed the man audibly downstairs, through the house and into the outside. Jaime Lewis lost the skirmish. She continued firing the occasional shot until Gwinnett authorities arrived.
