A Houston man was arrested on multiple charges after police found a stash of guns including an AR-15 in his room early Sunday at the top of the Hyatt Regency ahead of the downtown hotel’s massive New Year’s Eve celebration, authorities announced.

The suspect, identified as 49-year-old Russell Lawrence Ziemba, had fought with security guards after they tried to escort him to his room because he’d had too much to drink, police told Fox 26. When backup arrived, police noticed ammunition in the man’s hotel room on the 28th floor, Lt. Gordon Macintosh with Houston police told local media.

The man was arrested for unlawfully carrying a weapon and trespassing. When investigators looked into his room further, they located an AR-15, a shotgun, a handgun and lots of ammunition, Macintosh said.

Additional weapons and ammunition were found in the suspect’s truck, which was later seen being towed from the parking lot of the hotel. The truck also had “paper” license plates, according to reports.

Charges filed against Ziemba included assaulting a peace officer, Fox News reported.

The situation was “contained” and there were no specific threats to Houston, according to a tweet from Houston Police Chief Art Acevedo.

The man’s white Chevrolet Silverado was located and towed to be searched and examined, authorities said.

Investigators are working to learn why the man had the weapons.

It’s being reported that the man brought his weapons and ammo to his hotel room because he didn’t want them to get stolen from his truck.

According to Breitbart News, the hotel is a popular hotspot that people frequent every New Year’s. This year, they dropped some 50,000 balloons to celebrate the start of 2018, and apparently the man arrested had the perfect vantage point to carry out an attack similar to the one in Las Vegas earlier this year.

The Hyatt Regency, located in downtown Houston, is a traditional New Year’s Eve hotspot for the Bayou City.

The open-atrium design of the hotel could allow the man a sniper-like position from the hallway of the top floor.

Police arrested the man on charges of unlawfully carrying a weapon and trespassing, KHOU CBS11 reported.

Thankfully, the New Year’s celebrations went off without a hitch.

Remember to be vigilant, and if you see something out of the ordinary, make sure you let authorities know. After all, you may just end up saving countless lives if you do.
