The first hypersonic missile system is near full-scale production in Russia according to the tech department at Fox News. The “Zircon” missile is capable of traveling at a speed of over 4,600 mph and can deliver its payload 250 miles away. At most, impact will come just three short minutes after launch.
The missiles, which Russia is expected to roll out next year, are capable of traveling at five times the speed of sound. On board, they have a guided tracking system that is more accurate than the traditional ballistic systems deployed around the world today.
“State tests of Zircon are scheduled for completion in 2017 … and the missile’s serial production is planned to be launched next year,” the Russian news agency TASS reported last year, quoting sources. And last month, Russia’s Interfax news agency cited a source familiar with the Zircon project who said the 5-ton missile is likely to be tested for the first time this spring — earlier than the projected date of 2018 — “from a sea-based platform.”
The Zircon should be capable of delivering nuclear warheads as well, but the present range isn’t anything to worry about yet. The main concern everyone should take into account is whether or not DARPA has something in the works that can counteract the new Russian system—keeping in mind it won’t just be the Russians that have these new weapons since Russia will sell them to partners in the Middle East.
According to analysts at Stratfor, the United States does have similar projects in the works that will be available at roughly the same time the Russian systems are fully operational:
In fact, the U.S. may not be behind at all. According to Stratfor, U.S. Maj. Gen. Thomas Masiello announced in late February that the Air Force plans to have operational prototypes of its own hypersonic missile ready for testing by 2020.
And Stratfor forecasts that the U.S. and China will likely have the first operational long-range hypersonic missiles in their arsenals by 2025, years ahead of Russia
Things are certainly getting crazy out there—not only do we need enough weapons to destroy the world ten thousand times over, we need enough speed to do it faster than our enemies. The weapons race continues!
