A Southwest Airlines flight attendant is getting some positive attention for the comfort that he provided to a little girl named aboard one of his flights. This past Saturday Ericka Stewart posted a picture of her daughter Gabby and she introduced the world to Garrick – the flight attendant servicing their flight from Orlando, FL to Newark, NJ.

In the photo (pictured below) Stewart provides a detailed explanation that Garrick is holding her 9 year old daughter’s arm.  She suffers from type 1 diabetes as well as a serious flying phobia.

Garrick had apparently noticed that Gabby was struggling as soon as the plane was taking off. Throughout the flight he made sure to pay special attention to Gabby by making her laugh or offering her drinks, and generally going above and beyond with whatever he could do to make the little girl’s flight easier. Upon the descent of the flight the plane hit some turbulence due to rough weather, which sent Gabby into a complete panic attack. Garrick took the time to walk back and speak to Gabby.

He asked her if she would like him to sit next to her in the seat left empty close to the window. She began crying as the turbulence got rather rough and Garrick just told the young girl that she could “hang on as long as she needed.” Gabby’s mother went on to explain that she was travelling without her husband and also had 2 additional children in tow.  Garrick’s additional help, compassion, and caring were very appreciated.

According to Stewart’s Facebook post —
This is Garrick, an employee of yours working flight 1264 flying from Orlando to Newark on Friday, July 8th and holding his arm is my 9 year old daughter, Gabby, a type 1 diabetic with severe flying anxiety. Upon take off he noticed she was struggling. Throughout the flight he tried making her laugh and bringing her special drinks. As we were getting closer weather was rough and there was a bit of turbulence. Gabby began having a complete panic attack on descent. He came up to the front and asked if she would like for him to sit next to her in the empty seat. I was flying without my husband with two other smaller children and couldn’t leave my row, in the photo she is holding my hand from across the aisle. She happily accepted his offer. He suggested they talk to distract her from thinking about the landing so they talked for around 30 minutes about everything from his daughter who is the same age to her pets to what grade she is going into. During extremely rough turbulence she began crying and grabbed his arm, he gently told her she could hang on as long as she needed to. Just after this due to the extreme stress she was under her blood sugars began dangerously crashing. He got up from his seat to get her an orange juice and came right back to sit with her. She asked again if she could continue to hold his arm while the plane was landing. He of course agreed. Once on the ground while taxiing to the gate he came on the intercom and announced that his friend, Gabby, in the front row overcame her fears of flying and asked for a round of applause. The whole plane clapped for her. It was a wonderful experience on Southwest. We are forever grateful to have met such a beautiful, selfless soul.

Once they had arrived at their destination Garrick then took it upon himself to announce on the PA system about how brave Gabby was and that she had over her fear of flying.  “The whole plane clapped for her,” Stewart told the airline. “It was a wonderful experience on Southwest. We are forever grateful to have met such a beautiful, selfless soul.”  As a result of Stewart sharing her positive experience with Garrick and Southwest Airlines her post has been liked over 35,000 times and generated hundreds of comments and much feedback regarding the flight attendant  and his care and concern where he went above and beyond the call of duty for her daughter.

“Flight travel can be a scary thing for many, but our Crews really care about everyone’s experience. It warms our Heart to see such kindness and carrying from one of our amazing Flight Attendants, and we can’t even tell you how proud we are of your daughter for getting through the flight,” the airline wrote. “She is a brave girl and it was a pleasure having you and her both on board with us. Rest assured, we will make sure that Garrick gets recognition he deserves for his kindness.”

God Bless.
