In apparent defiance of the new sanctions imposed by the Trump administration, Iran held a military exercise Saturday to test missile and radar systems.

The aim of the exercise, held in Semnan province, was to “showcase the power of Iran’s revolution and to dismiss the sanctions,” Iran’s elite Revolutionary Guards website said, according to Reuters.

On Friday the Trump administration imposed sanctions on Iran, which it said were just “initial steps” and said Washington would no longer turn a “blind eye” to Iran’s hostile actions.

The sanctions on 25 individuals and entities were the opening salvo by President Donald Trump who has vowed a more aggressive policy against Tehran and came two days after the administration had put Iran ‘on notice’ following a ballistic missile test.

“The Trump Administration will no longer tolerate Iran’s provocations that threaten our interests, the days of turning a blind eye to Iran’s hostile and belligerent actions toward the United States and the world community are over,”” National Security Adviser Michael Flynn

Iran denounced the sanctions as illegal and said it would impose legal restrictions on American individuals and entities helping “regional terrorist groups”, state TV quoted a Foreign Ministry statement.

The IRGC, aerospace unit, is an elite military force charged with protecting the country’s Islamic system, carried out the drills in Semnan province, east of Tehran.

“We will do our best to defend the Iranian nation’s security day in and day out, and if the enemy makes any mistake our roaring missiles will land on their heads,” Brig. Gen. Amirali Hajizadeh, the IRGC aerospace forces’ commander

The Trump administration will respond to the latest drills, but they have not released a statement as of yet, but they appear to mark a further escalation in a standoff that has intensified by the day.

“Iran is playing with fire—they don’t appreciate how ‘kind’ President Obama was to them,” he tweeted Friday. “Not me!”~President Trump

Iran vowed late Friday to respond to the latest sanctions by placing legal restrictions on American companies and people. The targets will be announced later, its Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
