On October 28, USMC Iraq War veteran Kevin Wood was banned from La Plata High School property in Charles County, Maryland, for arguing with school officials over a homework assignment requiring his daughter to “list the benefits of Islam.”

The New York Daily News reports the assignment required Wood’s 11th grade daughter to explain “Islam’s five pillars, Mecca, and Muhammad.” Wood responded to the assignment by saying, “I don’t force my religious views on them, so don’t force your religious views on me.”

According to Mediaite.com, Wood was upset that La Plata High School “supposedly forbids students from practicing Christianity but they’re okay with Islam as a homework assignment.” Mediaite says Wood called the school and, at one point in the conversation, told a school official, “You [can] take that Muslim-loving piece of paper and shove it up your white ass.”

School spokesperson Katie O’Malley-Simpson alleges that Wood said something else–that “he was threatening to cause … a possible disruption at the school”–so they banned him from coming on school property. Wood’s wife, Melissa, responded to the ban by saying, “People do not understand what [my husband] endured when he was over in Iraq, and he lost friends, and he lost brothers and sisters to these people.” 

My Fox Carolina reports that Woods says he has witnesses who “have said [he] did not threaten anybody in any way, shape, or form” while talking to school officials.

Talks between the Woods family and school officials are ongoing.
