ISIS has made a daring move to take over yet another country starting in one of the most vulnerable areas in the world – the Philippines’ Autonomous Muslim Zone.  The Philippines is 92% Christian, yet 3 million of their citizens live in the zone controlled by Muslims and largely withdrawn from the centralized national power under the Philippine’s President Rodrigo Duterte.

Now, after numerous soldiers and police officers in the Muslim-held city of Marawi is in the midst of a full-blown insurgency.  At first, the mayor of the city attempted to retain the city’s autonomous control and pretended the issue was under control.  The reality is that, while President Duterte was visiting Moscow on an international relations trip, a terrorist group subordinate to ISIS took over the city on their behalf.  The group, which calls itself Maute, has raised the black ISIS banner over the city.

What followed was pure carnage that will only be accurately measured in the coming weeks.  What is known so far is grisly: numerous chapels, a college, and a hospital have been razed and set ablaze.  In a desperate attempt to gain control of the situation, the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) dropped small bombs on certain segments of the city.

Timeline of events:

5 pm Maute members reportedly occupied Amai Pakpak Medical Center, a public hospital in Marawi City.

6 pm Residents reported on social media that Marawi City Jail is under siege. Fire broke out at the facility early evening on Tuesday. (READ: 3 fires break out in Marawi as clashes rage)

7 pm The military confirmed that at least 5 soldiers were wounded as pursuit operations continued.

8 pm The police confirmed one cop was killed in clashes with the Maute Group.

8 pm onwards. Two other fires broke out in Dansalan College and Saint Mary’s Church.

11:30 pm From Russia, President Rodrigo Duterte declared martial law in the whole of Mindanao. The country’s top security and military officials are with him in his state visit to Russia. Not long after, Malacañang announced Duterte was cutting short his Russia trip and is flying back home immediately.

Duterte has since declared martial law over the region for the next 60 days.

Also, there’s another Filipino ISIS group that calls themselves Abu Sayyaf.

Philippine intelligence officials believe Abu Sayyaf is a group of about 400 Islamic militants were earlier affiliated to Al Qaeda but have pledged allegiance to the Islamic State, Irish Sun reports.

Abu Sayyaf is infamous for abducting foreign and local tourists, then ransoming them off and operate mostly in the southern islands of Basilan and Sulu.

Last year, the group beheaded two Canadian hostages after seizing them from a beach resort on Samal Island.

The bombing of a night market in Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte’s hometown Davao last year was also blamed on the militant group after one of the suspects in the bombing was revealed to be an Abu Sayyaf associate who once worked in the central Philippines.

In February, the group beheaded a 70-year-old yachtsman from Germany, Jurgen Kantner after his government refused to pay a $600,000 ransom.

Their most deadly attack came in 2004, when the militants bombed a passenger ferry off Manila Bay, killing more than 100.

The attack also became one of the country’s worst terrorist attacks.

Abu Sayyaf, whose overall commander is believed to be Alhabsi Misaya, remains one of the most serious militant threat in the region.
