A single ticket sold in Massachusetts has won the $758.7 million Powerball jackpot in Wednesday’s drawing, lottery officials announced early Thursday.

It was the second largest jackpot in U.S. lottery history. (The record is $1.6 billion.)


There was no immediate word which location in Massachusetts sold the winning jackpot ticket.

In addition to the jackpot winner, there were 31 winners of $1 million each in 19 states and six winners of $2 million each in six states.

Wednesday’s Powerball jackpot had been listed at $700 million earlier in the day. but brisk ticket sales pushed it up another $58 million or so by the time of the drawing. The lump sum payment before taxes had been estimated at $480.5 million.


Because there was a jackpot winner, the amount resets to $40 million for the next drawing.

The last time there was a Powerball jackpot winner was June 10 with a single ticket worth $447.8 million. It was sold in Sun City, Calif.

Powerball is held in 44 states, the District of Columbia, the U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico.

A $2 ticket gives you a one in 292.2 million chance at joining the hall of Powerball champions.

The drawings are held at 10:59 p.m. Eastern Wednesdays and Saturdays. Deadline to purchase tickets is 9:45 p.m.
