During his 2016 campaign, then-GOP nominee Donald Trump pledged an āAmerica firstā immigration policy.
Not because heās a āracistā and a ābigot,ā but because he believed (and continues to believe) that our immigration laws and policies should benefit our country and our citizens before they benefit citizens ofĀ otherĀ countries.
That is the kind of immigration policies most rational leaders pursue for their own countries, and itās one every American should embrace.
But of course, not all Americans did.
They were duped into believing that Trumpās policies were harmful ā to immigrants, to our country, and to our businesses.
āDuped,ā being the operative word.
Well, after four years of a president who has putĀ usĀ first, now even Democrats are coming over to his way of thinking on immigration policy ā even as Joe Biden pledges to give amnesty to millions of illegal aliens within his first 100 days.
A Rasmussen poll shows that Democrats are moving towards pro-American migration policies as Joe Biden prepares to implement pro-migrant, pro-business labor policies.
A May 2020 question asked respondents if they favored admitting more foreign workers for blue collar jobs, just 54 percent of Democrats agreed that it is ‘better for businesses to raise the pay and try harder to recruit non-working Americans even if it causes prices to rise.’
But that score jumped 10 points, to 64 percent, in the post-election November 15-19Ā pollĀ of 1,250 likely voters.
Similarly, in theĀ May poll, 33 percent of Democrats said they preferred government to ‘bring in new foreign workers to help keep business costs and prices down.’ In November, the response dropped 1o points to 23 percent, and the share of Democrats favoring cheap labor migration dropped from one-third to one-quarter.
A smaller shift was seen among self-described liberals. Their preference for Americans rose from just from 58 percent before the election up to 61 percent after the election. Their support for extra foreign workers slumped from a pre-election share of 30 percent down to 24 percent after the election.
Being āAmerica firstā when it comes to immigration policy isnāt āanti-immigrant,ā itāsĀ pro-America.
WeĀ shouldĀ want our country and our people to do well before we entertain the notion of bringing others in to share in our prosperity.
And for the millionth time, conservatives areĀ notĀ generally opposed to āimmigration.ā
We areĀ opposed to āillegal immigration.ā
