NASCAR champion and short track legend Sam Ard died on Sunday morning.

The NASCAR community received some sad news Sunday morning. Another legendary racer has died. 

Sam Ard, one of NASCAR’s greatest short-track drivers of all time, has passed away. A native of Asheboro, N.C., Ard was 78. 

From 1982-84, Ard won 22 races in what today is known as the NASCAR XFINITY Series. He finished second in the series championship in 1982 and won the title in both ’83 and ’84.

Ard set a series record with 10 victories in 1983. He still holds that record! 

After he retired because of injuries suffered in the final race of the 1984 season.

He never fully vanished from motorsports after retiring from NASCAR, becoming a car builder and team owner for various national touring and late-model drivers across the Southeast. He battled Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease in his later years.

In recent years, Ard had battled health issues, including Alzheimer’s Disease and Parkinson’s Disease.
