Gun manufacturers of New England- you have trouble brewing! The Massachusetts Attorney General has cooked up a “creative” way to investigate major firearms manufacturers with Massachusetts-based locations.  This witch hunt all being based on the state’s expansive consumer protection laws.  Massachusetts has a lengthy history of being less than friendly when it comes to firearms and the 2nd amendment.

The Libertarian party’s vice-presidential nominee, William Weld, was responsible from some of the previously most comprehensive gun control legislation in the state of Massachusetts as governor. Now the Attorney General of the same state is looking to launch this probe targeting at least two companies – Glock, Inc. and Remington Outdoor Co. There could potentially be others as well but the extent is not currently known.  The investigation only came to light because of recent lawsuits filed by both companies seeking the protection of the courts to block or narrow the scope of the Massachusetts’ safety investigation.  The complaint names it “overly intrusive and unduly burdensome.”  Counsel for the defendants state that Attorney General,  Maura Healey, is demanding that both firearms manufacturers surrender a wide-range of internal documents.  They have demanded production of everything from safety-related complaints from customers to company propriety documentation.

Glock is an Austrian company with its headquarters located in Austria. The company is controlled by founder Gaston Glock and has been since it’s founding in the 1980s. The company’s pistols revolutionized the market for handguns with their large ammunition capacity and lightweight, polymer frames. Critics of the Glock claim that its design makes it more prone to accidental fire than other handguns.  The Glock is known for firing with relatively little pressure from the shooter’s index finger and for an unconventional safety mechanism built into its trigger, which critics consider ineffective. The company has responded to these allegations stating that with proper training and careful technique, users will avoid accidental discharges. This could be said for any firearm – it’s a tool. You learn to use it properly and you respect it.

By contrast, Remington is a 200-year-old American company based out of Madison, North Carolina. It is part of the Freedom Group which is owned by a New York private equity firm known as Cerberus Capital Management. Remington has had its own safety issues with the recall of 2 lines of rifles from 2006 to early 2014 due to accidental discharges. The recall notice stated to owners that “any unintended discharge has the potential for causing injury or death. Immediately stop using your rifle until Remington can inspect it to determine if the XMP trigger has excess bonding agent used in the assembly process, which could cause an unintentional discharge.” Well duh? Bullets aren’t meant to tickle.  They are meant to stop, injure, maim, or kill. Care and caution and a healthy respect should ALWAYS be exercised when handling a firearm.

This is the latest attack in a lengthy string of them designed to water down our 2nd amendment rights so as to render them virtually useless and nonexistent. Responding to Glock’s lawsuit Healy cited the various news stories of people FAILING to exercise caution and respect when handling their firearm. She talked about a sheriff’s deputy accidentally firing a Glock pistol in San Francisco’s Hall of Justice, a Los Angeles police officer who was paralyzed from the waist down after his 3-year-old son accidentally fired his Glock pistol, and a Massachusetts man who was dancing at a July 4th party when his Glock handgun fired while it was in his pocket. Accidents happen in life in all aspects. Car accidents are a daily part of life – is the attorney general of Massachusetts now going to conduct an at length investigation into banning cars for “safety” as well?
