Bill Nutter lost both of his legs to diabetes, the second loss just prior to his passing. He also suffered from a heart condition known as arrhythmia that could cause his heart to stop beating without warning. Due to his condition and the need for round the clock care, Nutter’s daughter Brigitte Darton encouraged and helped her mother Carol Nutter finding a bed for the ailing veteran and retired police officer at the VA in Bedford. They both placed the man they loved most in the world in the care of this trusted medical facility believing that he would be well cared for. The staff at the hospital is ranked by the Veterans Administration as one of its best nationwide.

Nutter was exposed to Agent Orange, a toxic herbicide that started the deterioration of his health after returning home from Vietnam. While the the Bedford VA Medical Center is ranked highly by the VA, several employees of the facility have come forward to say there are serious safety concerns,  Employees state some veterans go without food for hours, and others left in soiled bed linens and clothes. An electrician stated the building contains cancer-causing asbestos NONE of which was known until after Nutter’s untimely passing.

As a result of her belief that her father would be well cared for getting the round the clock medical care he needed, she chose to go on a long-planned family vacation in July of 2016.  The day after she left she got the call that everyone dreads from her mother shocking her to her core stating – “Your father passed away. He didn’t wake up.”

Days later Carol was told that a member of the night shift, a nurse’s aide named Patricia Waible, failed to check on Nutter hourly as she was required to do based on his medical condition. Waible admitted she was playing video games all night rather than watching the ailing veteran.  She was supposed to be checking on Nutter multiple times an hour.  She claims she checked on him once or twice an hour, however, hospital cameras reveal her to be a liar.  Those cameras show Waible NEVER left her computer to check on this ailing veteran who served his country so well in multiple capacities with a known arrhythmia KNOWN to be life-threatening. Another nurse who reportedly made a slit throat gesture the following morning announcing Nutter’s death was terminated.

Another nurse who reportedly made a slit throat gesture the following morning announcing Nutter’s death has had her employment terminated with the VA Hospital. As a result of these disgusting and downright inhumane actions have caused the VA inspector general to launch a criminal investigation into the systematic failings at this medical center, some of which led to Nutter’s death.

After the Boston Globe reported on this story contacting VA Secretary David Shulkin’s office back in September 2017, the VA suspended Waible WITH pay. She was transferred to the cafeteria of the medical facility limiting her patient contact upon her return.  The VA is now seeking her permenant removal.

“I hold the VA responsible for all of this. They’re responsible for their employees. How many other people did this lady cause issues with? My dad might not have lived another five months, who knows? But if we could have had another month with him — this lady took that away.”
