Three people were shot and killed and two others were wounded when gunmen opened fire at a popular Mexican beach resort that was crowded with tourists, officials said.

The victims, all men, were resting under a palm tree in San José del Cabo, in the Los Cabos tourist region at the southern tip of the Baja California peninsula, Fox News reports.

Their identities have not been confirmed.

The two wounded, a man and woman, were taken to a hospital, prosecutors said

Mexican and foreign tourists were sunbathing on the beach when the bullets started flying.

“We heard the shots and just ran to get somewhere safe. It was automatic weapons fire,” a tourist told the BBC.

The beach was evacuated as police investigate the possible motive.

Southern Baja California has seen a surge in violence this year, though mostly outside tourist areas. Analysts blame much of the bloodshed on fighting among factions in the Sinaloa drug cartel and also clashes with the rival Jalisco New Generation cartel.

In a separate development, the bodies of 11 men and three women were just discovered in a mass grave near the tourist resort of San Jose del Cabo on the southern tip of the Baja peninsula, where violence between rival drug gangs has surged

Some of the bodies were dismembered, prosecutors said, adding that there could be more victims in the site.

Authorities are running DNA tests from the bones in an attempt to identify the remains that were discovered on Tuesday and Wednesday, the Baja California Sur state prosecutors office said in a statement.

The murder rate has surged in Baja California Sur in the past three years due to a spike in violence in the municipality of Los Cabos, which includes the towns of Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo.

The number of murders in the first four months of the year increased more than five times from the same period last year to 144, according to government data.

Mass graves, some with hundreds of bodies, have been discovered around Mexico in the states that have been hardest hit by drug violence, such as Tamaulipas, Veracruz, Morelos and Guerrero.

Some 30,000 people have disappeared in Mexico since drug violence increased sharply around 2007. More than 150,000 have been killed since then, when former president Felipe Calderon sent the army out to battle drug gangs.

Again- no Mexico trips for me. In fact, I have no intention of taking a vacation anywhere.

Look, if I want to set up a tent I have several acres to pitch a tent, build a campfire and enjoy.

Or I can jump in my RV and camp out there without spending a penny.

I have a pool so if I want to go swimming, I’m covered.

I’m staying home where I have the ability to fully protect myself- if you know what I mean.

Yup, that’s how I roll.

Stay safe patriots. ~Dean
