Assailants were throwing grenades at police, a source at the scene said.

The ISIS militants are said to have guns, bombs and machetes.

“An unknown number of people are trapped,” Gulshan police station duty officer Sayedur Rahman said.

A police bomb disposal unit was on standby to go in.

Express reports that two Italian citizens were killed and two police officers and a civilian were hospitalized in the attack, which took place in the Gulshan district of Dhaka.

The incident started after five gunman burst into the Holey [sic] Artisan Bakery in the area, which is the diplomatic heart of the South Asian city.

They opened fire, and while police and members of the Bangladeshi Rapid Action Battalion came to the scene, it is believed they are holding people hostage in the bakery.

The Rapid Action Batallion’s chief, Benazir Ahmed, said: “We believe we can resolve this peacefully.”

The American Embassy tweeted “Please shelter in place and monitor news”, while the American State department confirmed there was a hostage situation.

It’s being reported that at least 20 to 60 people have been taken hostage.

The gunmen are yelling ‘ALAHU AHKBAR’. 

The embassy is on LOCKDOWN.

There are reportedly 9 shooters barricaded with the hostages.
