BREAKING NEWS From Megaband U2

By now it is fairly obvious that there is something in the water in Hollywood that simply turns entertainers into complete lunatics.  The rock band U2, while not American has clearly made a stop and gotten into the water supply.  Case in point the band is now delaying their new album which in and of itself is no big deal.  Delays happen for one reason or another.

It is the reason given for said delay as per a recent interview with U2 frontman Bono with Rolling Stone published on Wednesday where he revealed that the reason for the delay was due to President Trump and his disruption of the “Moral Arc of the Universe.” The band intends for the new album to take on the “bully on the bully pulpit” because “silence is not an option.”

Bono said the election of Donald Trump for president of the United States of America marked –

“….for the first time in many years, maybe in our lifetime, the moral arc of the universe, as Dr. King used to call it, was not bending in the direction of fairness, equality and justice for all.

The baseness of political debate, the jingoism, the atavistic fervor of Trump’s verbiage reminded us that we were dreaming if we thought evolution applied to consciousness. Democracy is a blip in history and it requires a lot of focus and concentration to keep it intact.”

Given that the band hails from Ireland they seem to have a very high opinion of their influence on American politics, stating that back in January 2017 they delay a previous album “Songs of Experience,” according to U2 founding guitarist The Edge all stemming from President Donald Trump’s election.  This album was the follow-up to the bands platinum-selling 2014 album “Songs of Innocence.”

Now Bono states –

“There’s a couple of reasons why we delayed Songs of Experience. One personal, one political. The world around us was certainly changing out of all recognition, we nearly lost the European Union, something that has helped keep the peace in our region for nearly 70 years.”

Globalization replaced with localization is somewhat understandable, but the return of hard right views is not to be tolerated. If Marie La Pen had been elected president of France, the whole idea of a European Union would have been vulnerable.

You’ve had the same sort of disaffection in the United States with the rise of a new kind of constituency, people on the both left and right who have lost faith in the political process, the body politic, in political institutions. These sentiments are easily played and manipulated by the likes of Donald Trump.”

Bono states it is ultimately about the band’s willingness to be confrontational in their politics and specifically with President Trump and those of a hard right philosophy.

“It is a little bit of a departure as I’ve always believed in working across the aisle as an anti-poverty activist but this isn’t a matter of right or left. There’s a bully on the bully pulpit and silence is not an option.”

U2 is currently on tour celebrating the 30th anniversary of their iconic and much beloved 1987 album Joshua Tree. It is one of my own personal favorites and it makes me sad that U2 has now rendered themselves as to be virtually unlistenable by infusing it with this nonsense.  Someone that clearly has no understanding whatsoever of American politics or frankly of politics at all it seems spouting opinions and given a platform simply because he entertains for a living.

Bono recently ripped President Trump’s decision to do away with the DACA amnesty program on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon earlier this month.

U2’s Bono and The Edge talk about their album Songs of Experience, it’s relevance to the current U.S. political climate and the importance of immigrants to the American dream.

“It’s a strange place we find ourselves in. It’s dangerous out there when you have a little emperor there with a bad haircut and his finger on the nuclear arsenal. And a lot of people in silly costumes following me around. And then you have the dude from North Korea.”
