Message In A Bottle Surfaces On Beach After 36 Years- LOOK What It Says!

36 years ago a man named Douglas Stephens wrote a message, stuck it in a bottle and set it off to sea. Amazingly, the bottle was just found on the shore of Little St. Simon’s Island in Southern Georgia!

11 Alive reports that Ryan Burchett was fishing at his favorite spot on Little St. Simons with family and friends on June 17. The group was walking along the shore looking for seashells when Burchett saw a glimmer of brown glass.

“I knew it looked a little different,” he said. “When I held it up to the sun, I could see a note inside.” He popped the top, but the swing top separated from the cork. It fell to pieces, with the note still trapped inside.

“I could see there a message in it and I was like, ‘Holy smokes,'” he said.

“I thought, ‘How in the world am I going to get this out?'” he said. But he had to know what that note said. Eventually, he was able to wrap the paper around a stick and pull it out. When he saw the note was more than three decades old from a beach about 40 miles away, he was shocked.

“I think it probably landed near Little St. Simons years ago, and has been sitting at the bottom all this time, ” he said.

The bottle he’d found contained a note written by Stephens when he was 20 years old while he was visiting home from the University of Texas. He wrote:

“This bottle was set adrift off Fernandina Beach, Florida on the 10th of June, 1981. To the finder, I would appreciate it if you would respond as to where, when and found by whom. My permanent address is as follows on the back. Thanks, Douglas H. Stephens.”

Stephens doesn’t live at the address any more, and as it turns out, neither he nor Burchett has a Facebook page, ABC News reported. The two were able to find each other, however, when a friend suggested Burchett share the photos with Southeast Adventure Outfitters, an eco tour agency based on St. Simons Island. The company shared it on Facebook and it didn’t take long to find Stephens and help the men contact each other.

Here’s the Facebook post from Southeast Adventure Outfitters:

“1981 message in a bottle found today, 36 years later on Little St. Simons! Anyone know Douglas Stephens from Chamblee? Let’s share this around and find him! #littlestsimons.

UPDATE: And contact has been made with Douglas! Thanks to the power of social media we just talked to him and he’s doing great in Acworth (with no facebook). He still visits Amelia every year and said it brought back a flood of great memories from down there! Now we just have to reunite him with his note and share the pictures. Thanks Ryan Burchett for finding and sharing the pictures with us through our mutual friend Clement! #fernandina #littlestsimons”

And here’s the amazing photos of the message in the bottle!

The two plan to meet up around the end of the summer so Burchett can give the bottle back. Stephens said they plan to share a few laughs over a beer. Burchett is looking forward to it, too.

“I think that’s the most exciting thing — to give the bottle back,” said Burchett. “I’m more excited about that than when I found it.”

Wow! Pretty amazing stuff.

We hope you enjoyed this short break from politics!

God Bless.
