Vice President Mike Pence and his wife Karen got up and walked out of the Indianapolis Colts versus San Francisco 49ers game on Sunday after several players chose to take a knee during the national anthem.  23 players for the visiting San Francisco 49ers knelt in protest on the sideline during the Star Spangled Banner at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Indiana, Pence’s home state.

Pence issued a statement in a series of tweets later the same day stating –

“I left today’s Colts game because @POTUS and I will not dignify any event that disrespects our soldiers, our Flag, or our National Anthem.”

“At a time when so many Americans are inspiring our nation with their courage, resolve, and resilience, now, more than ever, we should rally around our Flag and everything that unites us.”

“While everyone is entitled to their own opinions, I don’t think it’s too much to ask NFL players to respect the Flag and our National Anthem.”

“I stand with @POTUS Trump, I stand with our soldiers, and I will always stand for our Flag and our National Anthem.”

The Vice President is now facing significant criticism for walking out of the game and even being accused of racism for doing so.  Many on the left are now demanding Pence’s resignation as a result. Sports columnist for the Indy Star, Tim Swarens stated that Vice President’s decision to leave in the face of what many Americans feel is complete and utter disrespect was “conduct unbecoming a true leader,” and a “premeditated political stunt.”

49ers player Eric Reid even went so far as to accuse the Vice President of racism stating that “this is what systemic oppression looks like.” Reid told reporters his opinions on Pence’s actions, stating –

“He knew our team has had the most players protest. He knew we were probably going to do it again. And so this is what systemic oppression looks like—a man with power comes to the game, tweets a couple things out and leaves the game with an attempt to thwart our efforts.”

Colts players wore black shirts with the words ‘We Will’ on the Front, and ‘Stand for equality, justice, unity, respect, dialogue, opportunity’ on the back.  Today marks the second weekend in a row that players have worn the shirts.  All stood during the national anthem with their arms locked.

Former 49ers quarterback and NFL pariah began this protest at the beginning of the 2016 NFL season taking a knee during the national anthem as a protest against police brutality and racial injustice. He then showed up at a press conference to explain his actions with a t-shirt depicting brutal Cuban dictator Fidel Castro making a mockery of the reason for his protest. Since last year the protest has gained momentum with players, coaches, and staff from many teams kneeling or standing with locked arms during the Star Spangled Banner. As a result of this many Americans have simply tuned out for football season choosing to simply not watch or not go to games at all.

This issue created by continued protests about perceived injustices while the very same organization freely employes men that freely rape or assault women, drive drunk or impaired, and variety of other criminal offenses – yet nothing is said about these issues.

This game was to have been a feel-good day for the NFL with the retirement of former Colts quarterback Peyton Manning’s #18 jersey, hence why the vice president and his wife chose to attend this particular game in the first place as many Colts fans in Indiana view Peyton Manning as a local hero of sorts.

President Trump had harsh words for the players at a September 22 rally.  He said, “Wouldn’t you love to see one of these NFL owners, when somebody disrespects our flag, to say, ‘Get that son of a bitch off the field right now, out, he’s fired’.”

He also urged football fans to walk out of NFL games if they saw it happen in front of them.
