There are 100 Navy flight instructors on strike until further notice.  The reason they are keeping the students they train grounded is a noble one—a dilapidated onboard oxygen system is leading to a dangerous in-flight scenario where student-pilots including Marine 1st Lt. Michael Pence.

The Vice President’s son and countless other student-pilots are in a very precarious situation when the fly these planes and that’s simply unacceptable and short sighted.  Students and trainers alike are in serious risk of a psychological syndrome called “Histotoxic hypoxia.”

Last week a student from the same training station as the VP’s son was dragged out of a plane “because he became incapacitated.” That’s not the only case either:

In March, a British exchange instructor pilot with thousands of hours in the cockpit had to conduct an emergency landing during a training flight near Meridian, Miss., after both he and his student experienced hypoxic symptoms.

In August, a flight instructor and his student were forced to eject near Kingsville, Texas, when they felt symptoms of hypoxia, crashing the multi-million dollar jet.  Both pilots ejected safely and were not seriously injured.

“40 Percent Of Pilots Refusing to fly.”

40 percent of pilots are refusing to fly their training flights.  The Navy is currently working towards a solution:

The senior Navy officials say they understand the pilots’ frustration and will soon issue more advanced hydrocarbon sensors which can by analyzed on-site, speeding up the investigation.
