Local authorities in Bloomington, Minn. are investigating a reported explosion at a mosque in the Minneapolis suburb.

This comes after a Muslim police officer, a native of Somalia, gunned down Justine Damond after she called 911 due what she believed may have been a sexual assault taking place in her neighborhood.

The blast occurred at the Dar Al-Farooq Islamic Center in Bloomington at approximately 5:05 a.m.

Bloomington police tweeted that the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives are assisting with the investigation, as well as the FBI.  They are saying it is “too early” to call this incident a “hate crime.”

The blast occurred during early morning prayers and Muslim worshipers were present.  Mohamed Omar, executive director of the center, states that the center of the blast is believed to have been the Imam’s office.  A window was broken and investigating authorities believe that an explosive device of some form was thrown through the window into the office. The building has sustained significant fire and smoke damage but at this time there are no reported injuries.

The executive director of the Muslim American Society of Minnesota, Asad Zaman held a press conference on Saturday morning in response to the blast.  Zaman said a member of the congregation saw a pickup truck speeding away from the mosque after the explosion. There is a $10,000 reward being offered for information in connection with the incident.  Muslim leaders plan to meet later today to determine a suitable response to the attack.

Neighbors across the street from the mosque reported waking up to a loud bang or pop, some even feeling the concussion reverberate through windows.

Minneapolis boasts the largest Somali refugee community in America. This particular mosque has gained nation wide scrutiny and suspicion due to accusations it is helping to radicalize young Somali men for jihad in their homeland.

As many as 20 young Somali men have gone missing from Twin Cities homes during the past few months with some calling relatives to say they are in Somalia. One young man in question of Somali origin blew himself up in an apparent suicide bombing.  The FBI is investigating alleged connections with Al-Shabaab, which has been dubbed a terrorist organization by the U.S. government.

Omar stated of the accusations – “Lies…very clear lies” and emphatically insists leaders at the mosque have never preached radicalism or violence. He laughed at claims that the mosque sends money to Al-Shabaab.

“This money is collected from the community here, and it serves the community here,” he said. “It doesn’t go anywhere else.”
