MAUSTON, Wisconsin – The suspected killer of a former prominent Juneau County judge has died, according to reports.

The dead man, Douglas K. Uhde, age 56, reportedly had a hit list that included U.S. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers according to law enforcement officials.

According to Wisconsin Attorney General Josh Kaul the Juneau County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call notifying law enforcement of an armed person and reported hearing two shots fired in a Township of New Lisbon home.

The caller had exited the home and contacted law enforcement from a nearby home, Breaking 911 reports.

Following failed attempts to negotiate with Uhde, who was in the home, at 10:17 a.m. the Juneau County Special Tactics and Response Team entered the residence and located retired Judge John Roemer, a sixty-eight-year-old male, deceased.

When SWAT entered the home, they found Roemer zip-tied to a chair and fatally shot, according to the law enforcement official.

Uhde was located in the basement with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. Law enforcement began life-saving measures, and Uhde was transported to a medical facility in critical condition. He was declared legally brain-dead on June 4 and has been taken off life-support.

His organs were donated.

The murder weapon was recovered at the scene.

ABC News has more:

“This does appear to be a targeted act,” AG Kaul told reporters. “The individual who is the suspect appears to have had other targets as well. It appears to be related to the judicial system.”

Kaul did not provide further details Friday on the man killed and the other targets, beyond that they appear to be targeted “based on some sort of court case or court cases.” The Wisconsin Department of Justice said in an update Saturday that the victim was retired Juneau County Judge John Roemer.

Wisconsin court records show that Roemer was involved in Uhde’s sentencing for a 2002 criminal conviction. In 2005, he sentenced Uhde to six years in state prison and nine years extended supervision for armed burglary, a felony, with concurrent sentences for three lesser counts. Uhde had pleaded no contest to the charges.
