“We can confirm that we did detect a missile launch from North Korea,” the official said, speaking to a representative from Fox News and on condition of anonymity. “We are assessing and will have more information soon.”

The launch is a likely effort to expedite the development of its weapons program, reports Fox and is the first of such launches since Donald Trump became president. The North Korean military test launched its mid-range missile known as the “Musudan” twice back in October.

AFF Media previously reported on comments made by US Secretary of Defense James Mattis — comments that, according to anonymous reports by fake news sites such as CNN are being attributed as motivating factors behind the launch.

For what it’s worth, Reuters has also reported that the South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff did implicate Mattis, who warned the North Koreans of an “overwhelming” military response in their statement to the public: “Our assessment is that it is part of a show of force in response to the new U.S. administration’s hardline position against the North,” the office said.

Reuters’ Coverage Continues

“The South’s military said Seoul and Washington were analyzing the details of the launch. Yonhap News Agency said the South Korean military is assessing the launch to confirm whether it was a Musudan intermediate-range ballistic missile, which has a designed flight range of 3,000 kilometers (1,800 miles).”

CNN Reports:

“The South Korean government and the international community are working together to take punitive actions appropriate for this launch,” acting President Hwang Kyo-ahn said.  Trump, when asked by reporters about the missile launch, declined to comment.
