The SEAL is the first American service member killed in action in Somalia in decades, said U.S. Africa Command spokesman Patrick Barnes said.

In the 1993 Battle of Mogadishu, also known as the “Black Hawk Down” incident, 18 U.S. military members were killed.

Three other SEALs were wounded in the gunfight in Somalia, one official said. The Pentagon would not disclose the extent of the injuries due to privacy concerns.

“U.S. forces were conducting an advise and assist mission alongside members of the Somali National Army” near Bari, about 40 miles west of Mogadishu, according to a statement from U.S. Africa Command. The mission involved the use of U.S. helicopters and a Navy SEAL assault force partnered with Somalis, Lucas Tomlinson at Fox News reports.

“This was their mission,” said Pentagon spokesperson Capt. Jeff Davis, referring to the Somali troops.

The SEALs were attacked “early” in the mission, not long after landing, and the Pentagon was still assessing if the mission — targeting a “group of people” associated with attacks on Somalia’s capital — was a success. Despite a recent focus on the country by the Trump administration, the authority for the mission was given under orders issued by the Obama administration.

“What occurred last night…was not anything new,” Davis said.

Al Shabab “presents a threat to Americans and American interests,” the U.S. Africa Command statement said.

Corey Dickstein at Stars and Stripes reports that Somalia’s President Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed, who holds Somali and American citizenship, has vowed to destroy al-Shabab within the next two years. The terrorist group, which the Pentagon considers al-Qaida’s third most dangerous affiliate, has increased operations against government forces and civilian targets since Mohamed declared war on al-Shabab last month.

“This is a group that has murdered Americans, it has radicalized and recruited terrorists and fighters in the United States and has conducted and inspired attacks against Americans and our interests around the world,” Davis said.

The Pentagon did not identify the fallen SEAL by name on Friday. His family has already been notified, but the Defense Department policy is to wait 24 hours after next-of-kin notification to release names of deceased servicemembers, the defense official said.

The SEAL is the fourth American killed in action in just more than one week. Two Army Rangers, Sgt. Joshua P. Rodgers and Sgt. Cameron H. Thomas, were killed while conducting a raid April 26 against Islamic State militants. The Pentagon is investigating their deaths due to a concern that they might have been struck by friendly fire.

Another American soldier died Saturday in Iraq. First Lt. Weston C. Lee was killed by an improvised explosive device while advising Iraqi security forces battling ISIS inside Mosul.

Our hearts and prayers, as well as our appreciation go out to this SEAL’s family.

Rest In Peace brother.
