North Carolina’s Republican Party issued a blistering rebuke of the National Collegiate Athletic Association Monday night, accusing the organization of being apathetic to sexual assault.

North Carolina Republican-led legislature and Republican Gov. Pat McCrory passed an ordinance in March stating that transgender people must use the public bathroom associated with the gender of their birth.

The law, known as House Bill 2, nullified a Charlotte measure passed a month earlier that that would have allowed transgender people to choose the restroom matching their gender identity.

Supporters tout the state law as an important measure to protect both safety and privacy.

In protesting the law which they claim is discriminatory toward lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people, the National Collegiate Athletic Association announced Monday that it is cancelling all post-season championship games scheduled for play in North Carolina.

The NCAA Board of Governors said that “championships and events must promote an inclusive atmosphere for all college athletes, coaches, administrators, and fans.”

The spokesperson for the state’s Republican party lambasted the NCAA in response, arguing that the group has no leeway to wade into the debate over bathroom policies until men’s and women’s sports teams are merged together.

“This is so absurd it’s almost comical,” North Carolina Republican Party spokesperson Kami Mueller said in a defiant statement Monday. “I genuinely look forward to the NCAA merging all men’s and women’s teams together as singular, unified, unisex teams. Under the NCAA’s logic, colleges should make cheerleaders and football players share bathrooms, showers and hotel rooms. This decision is an assault to female athletes across the nation. If you are unwilling to have women’s bathrooms and locker rooms, how do you have a women’s team?

“I wish the NCAA was this concerned about the women who were raped at Baylor,” Mueller continued. “Perhaps the NCAA should stop with their political peacocking — and instead focus their energies on making sure our nation’s collegiate athletes are safe, both on and off the field.”

The NCAA joined the National Basketball Association, Bruce Springsteen, PayPal Holdings Inc. and other major groups in boycotting North Carolina because of the state’s bathroom ordinance.
