BREAKING NEWS – A massive 7.8 magnitude earthquake hit Turkey and neighboring Syria on Monday, resulting in over 4800 fatalities and thousands of injuries. The quake caused thousands of buildings to collapse and left many residents trapped under the rubble. The death toll is expected to rise as rescuers search for survivors in an area that is already grappling with the 12-year civil war in Syria and a refugee crisis.

At the time of this report here are the stats:

In Turkey, at least 2,921 people were killed, according to reports.

Nearly 14,ooo people were injured, and nearly 6,000 buildings were destroyed, the government reported.

In Syria nearly 1500 people were dead, according to the state health ministry.

Thousands more were injured across the country.

The early morning quake woke up residents and forced them to evacuate in the rain and snow to avoid falling debris. Throughout the day, strong aftershocks continued to shake the region, including one that was nearly as strong as the initial earthquake. By nightfall, workers were still extracting bodies and searching for survivors, causing families to wait in desperation for news of their loved ones.

The region sits on top of major fault lines and is frequently shaken by earthquakes. Some 18,000 were killed in similarly powerful earthquakes that hit northwest Turkey in 1999.

This is a developing story and as we said the death toll is expected to rise dramatically.
