The average American employees look for leadership in the work place and in a recent study it shows that many aren’t getting just that. For instance an already underpaid, over taxed and over worked low level employee at a factory or retail shop that comes in on a Monday morning would be more willing to put in the extra effort to ensure the quality of their work as well as customer service was taken to the next level if they saw their supervisor doing the same, that’s human nature.

From Gallup: Day in and day out, managers are tasked with engaging employees, but 51% of managers have essentially “checked out,” meaning they care little, if at all, about their job and company. And that attitude has dire consequences. A manager’s engagement — or lack thereof — affects his or her employees’ engagement, creating what Gallup calls the “cascade effect.” Essentially, employees’ engagement is directly influenced by their managers’ engagement, whose engagement is directly influenced by their managers’ engagement.

By Gallup’s estimates, the “not engaged” group costs the U.S. $77 — $96 billion annually through their impact on those they manage. And when we factor in the impact of the “actively disengaged” group, those figures jump to $319 — $398 billion annually.

I can’t stress enough the importance of making sure all employees are engaged and pulling their weight so to speak in today’s world. The economic state of not only our country but the world has come to the point that the small things and attention to detail can make or break a business fast.

I speak from experience on this subject having been the low level employee as well as someone in a management position. It takes a team effort. People should also understand that true leaders lead by example also and that no one in any position should rest on their past achievements which got them where they are today- all can be gone and there are always someone waiting to fill the seat you may have grown so comfortable in.
