A high school teacher in northwest Indiana outside of Chicago has been arrested after students posted a video of her taking drugs in a classroom. The teacher is 24-year-old Samantha Cox and she is an English teacher at Lake Central High school in St. John, Indiana right near the Illinois/Indiana state line.

Cox has been arrested on suspicion of felony possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia. The teacher was filmed by students doing drugs on a cellphone video in an empty classroom. The video shows a woman sitting in the corner of an empty classroom doing drugs.  Students witnessed the action and recorded it, then posted on social media and reported it to the Lake Central High School principal.

Will Rogers is a junior at Lake Central High School and he stated he originally was not sure exactly what he was seeing but it soon became clear. He shot the video through the window of a locked classroom door and states of the incident –

She’s in the corner, hiding with a chair and a book and what appears to be cocaine, putting it into lines…..and I just realized that my English teacher just did cocaine.”

According to Police Chief James Kveton, it may actually have been a mixture of cocaine and heroin, he states –

“This information was brought to the attention of school administration by student witnesses, and school administration immediately notified St. John police.”

Naturally, the video spread like wildfire throughout the 3,400 students of the high school, their parents, and other members of the local community. The investigation into Cox continues to be ongoing and she is being held at the local jail pending charges of possession of a controlled substance, a level 6 felony, and possession of drug paraphernalia, a Class C misdemeanor, according to a news release from the St. John Police Department.

St. John’s police department responded to a call about the narcotics situation. A second cell phone video shows the teacher being led out of the school wearing handcuffs. Police led Cox from the school in handcuffs, and she now faces charges of possessing a controlled substance and drug paraphernalia. Students described Cox as a popular English teacher in her second year at the school.

The Lake Central superintendent Dr. Larry Verraco sent a district-wide statement via a prerecorded message to parents after Cox’s arrest, stating –

“Earlier today, Lake Central administration was made aware of a situation regarding a teacher at Lake Central High School. Swift and forceful action was taken in conjunction with St. John and Dyer police departments. The safety of all students remains the top priority of our school staff and a full investigation is ongoing.”

Another junior at the high school, Anthony Rios states of the situation with Cox –

“You’re told as a child to listen to them, respect them and stuff like that… But it’s kinda hard to respect somebody who does cocaine in a classroom.”

Parents and school administration credit students for doing the right thing by immediately reporting the teacher.
