At least one woman was shot and killed and several others were wounded on Sunday when a gunman opened fire inside a Tennessee church, Nashville police are reporting.

Nashville police received calls about a shooting at Burnette Chapel Church of Christ in Antioch just after 11 a.m., officials told Fox News. The church is about 30 minutes southeast of Nashville.

The shooter was also shot and taken into to the hospital, according to the Nashville Fire Department.

Another person was pistol-whipped and taken to the hospital, officials said.

“This is a mass casualty situation. All of the wounded have been transported to area hospitals. The majority are older adults,” Nashville Fire Department wrote on Twitter.

Joseph Pleasant, a spokesman for the Nashville Fire Department, confirmed at least seven people were shot and taken to the hospital. The extent of their injuries were unclear at this time, but everyone except for one victim was over the age of 60.

Police say a male gunman wearing a neoprene ski mask opened fire at Burnette Chapel Church of Christ, killing a woman and injuring six others. One man who confronted the shooter was violently pistol whipped, The Tennessean reported.

A male member of the church exited the sanctuary, got a gun from his vehicle and confronted the shooter, who then shot himself, according to Don Aaron, spokesman for police.

Aaron said police have identified the gunman, who is believed to be a resident of Rutherford County, and will be releasing his name shortly.

Witnesses at the scene described the bloody aftermath of the shooting.

Joe Love, 67, and his wife Donna Love, 56, who live across the street from the church said they initially heard the shots but thought it was a nearby car crash.

“All of the sudden this man and woman came up to the porch,” Joe Love said.

Love walked over to the church with the man and the woman and saw a deceased woman lying in the parking lot. Love also said he saw an elderly man with a walker lying on the ground, adding he had apparently been knocked down by the shooter.

The woman who approached Love initially identified herself as the sister of the deceased woman. Love and the sister covered up the victim with two towels.

“He shot her like she was a damn dog in his backyard,” Love said.

The church has a weekly service starting at 10 a.m. Sunday. The surrounding area was closed off as police investigated the situation.
