The village and surrounding area has been land mine free ever since the Demilitarized Zone was created and filled with over one million land mines.

Last week, North Korea planted land mines near a truce village inside the Demilitarized Zone, according to South Korea.

South Korea would not speculate why the DPRK planted land mines around Panmunjom, Yonhap news agency, citing an unidentified South Korean government official, said the North apparently planted the mines to prevent front-line North Korean soldiers from defecting to South Korea via Panmunjom.

The U.N. command released a statement that it “strongly condemns” any North Korean action that jeopardizes the safety of personnel in the DMZ.

“The presence of any device or munition on or near the bridge seriously jeopardizes the safety” of those near the border, the U.N. Command, which administers Panmunjom and is headed by the U.S. military, said in a statement.

The Korean War armistice ended the 1950-53 Korean War, signed by the United States, the People’s Republic of China, North Korea, and South Korea and is now a popular tourist spot for visitors from both sides.

Under the Korean War armistice, the two sides are barred from carrying out any hostile acts within or across the 4-kilometer (2.5-mile) -wide DMZ.

Once again, the DPRK is under direct violation of not only international law, but now also in direct violation of the armistice agreement.

North Korea has not responded to South Korea nor the U.N. regarding the land mines placed around Panmunjom.

It is baffling how the DPRK can continue to break international law and signed treaties with 0 accountability.

The U.N. and U.S. continue to allow North Korea to go unchecked as they continue their nuclear capabilities.
