New information suggests the Department of Justice may be compiling a nationwide gun ownership database, using data collected by the National Security Agency.

The focus of NSAs abuses of privacy has focused on their collection of “metadata” from mobile phone calls. But justification for the collection, outlined in an “Administration White Paper last August, centers on revealing “relationships” between individuals. Under that logic, any documents or data that establishes a “relationship” could be targeted – including financial records, location information and firearm sales. This would fall under the Patriot Act’s “business record” allowances, which permits the collection of much more than phone data.

Information, of course, is not forthcoming from the NSA or the Obama Administration, but some lawmakers might be aware of this issue. In a proposed change to the Patriot Act, it specifically excludes the bulk collection of the following:

• Most medical records.

In a letter from Senators Ron Wyden and Mark Udall to the Director of National Intelligence, they asked about the NSA’s collection of data, including the following:

• Library records

• Firearm sales records

• Financial information

• Pharmacy records

Interestingly, both lists contain “firearm sales records,” which sticks out on both lists. Perhaps a coincidence – perhaps not.

But journalist Marcy Wheeler has long suspected the DOJ was compiling a gun registry. Until the Administration answers the Senators questions – or these questions, we can only wonder how deep Obama’s spies are digging into our personal lives, and liberties.
