The Department of Justice has announced Wednesday that a man has been arrested.  His name is Harold Thomas Martin, age 51, and he is accused of stealing classified information from the government. Edward Snowden revealed government surveillance of American’s private communications by their own government by the NSA.   The information that Martin is accused of taking was deemed of a different nature but the exact nature of which has not yet been released. The DOJ has charged Martin with “theft of government property “as well as “unauthorized removal and retention of classified materials by a government employee or contractor.” He’s accused of taking six classified documents “critical to a wide variety of national security issues.”

Martin was originally arrested in August after investigators searched his home in Glen Burnie and found documents and digital information in his possession and highly classified information stored on various devices. Information was also recovered from Martin’s vehicle and two storage sheds on his property. Interesting to note, the same month Martin was arrested some of the most powerful hacking tools used and available to the NSA were leaked online. Those tools included “exploits” that take advantage of known weaknesses and flaws in firewalls which would allow the government to gain control of a network, for instance.

Martin is currently in custody and faces up to 11 years in prison.  His attorney is public defender, James Wyda.  Wyda states  “There’s no evidence that Hal Martin has betrayed his country. What we do know is that Hal Martin loves his family and his country, he served this nation honorably in the U.S. Navy, and he has devoted his entire country to protecting his country.”

Twitter users have weighed in noting the double standard in the Hillary Clinton email scandal and various other things noted about current regime in charge.

Military records show that Martin was a decorated Naval lieutenant and served for more than a decade.  During his years of active service, he spent time on the USS Seattle before ending his military career as a reservist with broad interests related to cyber issues.  Among the awards he received were a Joint Meritorious Unit Award, a Navy Expeditionary Medal, and a National Defense Service Medal.

According to an affidavit filed with the court –

On August 27, 2016, search warrants were executed at Martin’s residence in Glen Burnie, including two storage sheds, as well as upon his vehicle and person.  During execution of the warrants, investigators located hard copy documents and digital information stored on various devices and removable digital media. A large percentage of the materials recovered from Martin’s residence and vehicle bore markings indicating that they were property of the United States and contained highly classified information of the United States, including Top Secret and Sensitive Compartmented Information (SCI). In addition, investigators located property of the United States with an aggregate value in excess of $1,000, which Martin allegedly stole.

A spokesman from the NSA declined to comment about the investigation and subsequent arrest.  Booz Allen has released a statement upon learning one of its employees had been arrested stating –

We immediately reached out to the authorities to offer our total cooperation in their investigation, and we fired the employee. We continue to cooperate fully with the government on its investigation into this serious matter.”

Snowden himself weighed in on the matter via his Twitter account from Russia where he has sought asylum. He mentions that under the current administration the fact that Martin was not charged under the Espionage Act was a noteworthy absence. Snowden also mentions that Boaz Allen has a “unique contract” with the government and in itself is worthy to investigate.

No motive for removing the information has been revealed nor is the exact nature of what was taken.  The complaint makes broad accusations stating, Martin initially denied taking documents home, but once confronted with specific examples, admitted he did so and that he knew the materials were classified. The complaint alleges that Martin “stated that he knew what he had done was wrong.” Given the nature of the material that Snowden uncovered for the American people regarding the government’s actions against them, it will be interesting to learn just what Martin has uncovered in the days and weeks to come.
