The Salt River Mustangs will not be removed before Congress returns to work in September. The beloved horses reside in Tonto National Forest.

Animals have more of a right to be here than humans who destroy their own world. It’s not like the horses are in a metro area, killing people, or destroying buildings. So I don’t see why they just can’t let the animals live. It is mind blowing to say the least, especially with all the uproar from the feds over a cat killed half way across the world. These animals are part of our history and they belong right where they are at. We see where their concern is.

The pledge came from Tonto Supervisor Neil Bosworth after he and the Cabinet secretary who oversees the Forest Service were stampeded by Arizona elected officials demanding a halt to the planned roundups.

Meantime, a lawyer for a group trying to protect the horses filed suit Wednesday in Federal Court in Phoenix, seeking an injunction to block the removal. The suit is expected to get a hearing in the next day or two.

The Forest Service originally said that removal of the horses could begin as early as Friday.

But spokeswoman Carrie Templin had said Tuesday that date was up in the air, because the service hadn’t hired a contractor to round up and remove the estimated 65 to 100 horses that live around Saguaro Lake.

Republican State Rep. Kelly Townsend of Mesa said Bosworth made the commitment to push back the start of the removal after meeting Wednesday with her and two House of Representatives staffers, including Peter Gentala, counsel to the House majority leader.

“We got our message across and we were successful,” she said. “We have a good solid agreement.”

The Forest Service has maintained that only an act of Congress can allow the horses to remain on forest land. The agency says it does not have the legal authority to manage the horses, which it claims are stray animals.

Advocates for the horses are concerned that a roundup would cause the deaths of many of the horses, and a resulting auction could drive many others to the slaughterhouse.

Did I miss the part where the horses are in some way harming the National Forest? If not then what is the justification for this absurdity? Oh I forgot, “Public safety reasons” what about the horses’ well being? Not to mention what will be the impact of the forest’s health, all animals play some role to maintaining it, biology for 1st graders.

This is nothing like the killing of Cecil the lion, the dentist paid to hunt the cat legally. This is different, it’s our own government and this is criminal! Let’s take a stand for the horses, this is a National Forrest and the animals within it should be protected. They belong to the people of the United States, NOT to the special interests of Cattle Ranchers or the Bureau of Land Management thugs. We the people need to protect our wildlife even if our own government will not. Time to take a stand.
