black thugs

Last April when Detroit-area motorist Steve Utash was beaten into a coma by a gang of black thugs, for no other reason than he was white, the nation was shocked. But that shock pales in comparison to the exceedingly light sentences the assailants received. For a racially motivated attack that destroyed a man’s life, the defendants received anywhere from 6 years to “I’m sorry I won’t do it again.”

Witnesses to the crime said at least 20 scumbags participated in the beating of Utash, but cops only managed to apprehend 5 suspects. All 5 have readily admitted to participating in the assault, so it was just a matter of putting these pieces of human garbage behind bars for as long as possible. Prosecutors had a much different idea. First, they decided not to peruse hate crime charges, which in Michigan is called ethnic intimidation. Then, they let the defendants plea down to slap on the wrist sentences.

The Detroit Free Press reports the following sentences:

Wonzey Saffold (cool name, bro) got the worst of the bunch with 6-10 years in prison. Convicts generally spend about a third of their sentence behind bars so it’s likely he’ll be out in 2 years to continue to prey upon society.

Bruce Wimbush Jr. was given 3 years of probation and must submit to drug testing. Bruce Wimbush Sr. must be very proud. I’m just kidding, there is no father/son relationship here.

An unnamed 17-year old, who was 16 at the time of the assault, will go into a residential placement program. I have no idea what that is, but it hardly sounds like prosecutors lowered the boom on him.

Latrez Cummings (cooler name, bro) is the only defendant still awaiting sentencing. The Judge wants to confirm the he is enrolled in on-line school before he slaps Cummings on the wrist and tells him not to do it again.

James Deontae Davis was given the choice of either a year in jail or work release with five years of probation. This sentence is actually below the guidelines for the crime he plea-bargained to which calls for 19 months to 3 years in jail.

The reason why Wayne County Circuit Judge James Callahan imposed the super-light sentence is because he said Davis gave an “honest expression of remorse and apologies.” The judge also said that he was “embarrassed” that he let Ken Utash, Steve’s brother, read a victim’s statement prior to sentencing. Unbelievable…
