Sassy Liberty AMERICA’S FREEDOM FIGHTERS –

Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-FL) is defiant and denies any wrong doing on her part with regard to the debacle that is unfolding concerning her former IT aide Imran Awan.

She stands by her decision to keep him on her payroll despite all other House Democrats that employed Awan cutting ties after he was banned from the House network pending an investigation into his actions.

Wasserman Schultz stated in an interview with the Orlando Sun Sentinel

“I believe that I did the right thing, and I would do it again. There are times when you can’t be afraid to stand alone, and you have to stand up for what’s right…..It would have been easier for me to just fire him.”

Wasserman Schultz finally capitulated and fired Awan, but only after he was arrested on bank fraud charges at an airport while trying to leave the country. Awan has been charged with bank fraud for obtaining a loan “for a rental property he does not own” and then sending the money to Pakistan.

As the former Democratic National Committee chairwoman, Wasserman Schultz is the most prominent Democrat who employed Awan. Her decision to keep employing Awan has come under fire.  Instead of firing him, Wasserman Schultz said her office worked with the House chief administrative officer to develop a job description that “would allow him to continue to do work … until such time as there were other charges brought or we had some evidence that there was something that was produced that warranted further action.”

Wasserman Schultz stated –

“I had grave concerns about his due process rights being violated. When their investigation was reviewed with me, I was presented with no evidence of anything that they were being investigated for. And so that, in me, gave me great concern that his due process rights were being violated. That there were racial and ethnic profiling concerns that I had.”

She claims she has been presented no evidence whatsoever that indicates that he has done anything wrong and she believes Awan is being pursued and singled out simply due to Islamophobia. Yet Awan and his family members were and remain under investigation for “procurement violations and data transfer violations,” in addition to the bank fraud activity that Awan was arrested for recently. His wife, Hina Alvi, fled the country to Pakistan with their three children, their household goods, and over $12,000 in cash back in March. FBI Special Agent Brandon C. Merriman does not expect that she plans to return to the U.S. according to documents filed with the court.

Rep. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) thinks that money could pose a national security problem, saying “There’s just a lot of behavior that is not easy to explain.” DeSantis wrote a letter on Wednesday to Attorney General Jeff Sessions, calling for Sessions to expand the investigation by working with the Treasury Department to freeze Awan’s assets and investigate activity related to his bank account.

DeSantis states –

“While we can never tolerate breaches of the public trust, the wire transfer to Pakistan is particularly alarming as Pakistan is home to numerous terrorist organizations. The allegations levied against Imran Awan are alarming and could have serious national security ramifications.

The Department of Justice must work to immediately mitigate the damage done by Awan and take whatever measures are necessary, including freezing illicit funds, in order to fully investigate this incident.”

Chairwoman of the Republican National Committee,  Ronna Romney McDaniel, emphatically stated –  “There is a huge national security issue. She’s not cooperating. She’s obstructing every chance she can.

Yet Wasserman Schultz claims this is a Muslim witch hunt and that the coverage on the case by Conservative and right wing groups has been a complete fabrication.

“The right-wing media circus fringe has immediately focused not on this run-of-the-mill investigation just reporting the facts, but jumped to outrageous, egregious conclusions that they were trying to, that they have ties to terrorists and that they were stealing data.”

She claims that Awan is was just utterly absurd to presume Awan was fleeing the country despite his known destination for Pakistan which is a widely known hotbed for Islamic terrorist activity. She claims Awan is simply taking “unpaid leave.”

“He is from Pakistan. … He’s an American, a naturalized American citizen. His children are natural born citizens. His wife is a naturalized American citizen. And I mean when you’re trying to flee, you don’t fill out a form with your employer and go on unpaid leave.”

Wasserman Schultz then further claims that the only reason this case is getting so much attention from Republicans and Conservatives is because they are using it as a distraction from the investigation into whether President Trump colluded with Russia.
