As if things couldn’t get any more terrifying, now United States is considering the use of AI-controlled drones which can autonomously make decisions on whether to kill human targets.

As expected, this topic has sparked a huge debate between those who see it as a necessary defense measure and those who are concerned with the potential drawbacks.

Countries such as China, Israel, and the US are developing lethal autonomous weapons for battlefield purposes, but there is also a very good chance that they could be mass-produced and end up in the hands of rogue nations or terrorists.

This threat has led some countries to call for an international treaty banning these weapons, while others oppose any such move.

US Deputy Secretary of Defense Kathleen Hicks spoke about how technologies such as AI-controlled drone swarms will help balance out China’s numerical superiority in weapons and manpower.

“We’ll counter the PLA’s mass with mass of our own, but ours will be harder to plan for, harder to hit, harder to beat,” she said.

Air Force secretary Frank Kendall expressed that these drones must have the capability to make lethal decisions while under human supervision.

He added that not having this advantage would put them at a disadvantage against their enemies – “Individual decisions versus not doing individual decisions is the difference between winning and losing — and you’re not going to lose.”

Critics fear that using machines instead of humans when making life-or-death choices on the battlefield is dehumanizing; taking away our rights as people by giving machines control over us.

Alexander Kmentt from Austria’s negotiating team stated “This is really one of the most significant inflection points for humanity… What’s the role of human beings in the use of force — it’s an absolutely fundamental security issue, a legal issue and an ethical issue.”

In addition, military drones may become too powerful if they fall into dangerous hands like rogue nations or terrorists groups who could use them against innocent populations without any accountability whatsoever.

Charlie Brooker even incorporated killer robots into his famous episode All Is Lost from Black Mirror where robot dogs relentlessly pursue humans they detect as “threats”.

Unfortunately this isn’t just fiction anymore – recently police actually employed a robotdog during an armed standoff at Los Angeles.

Artificial Intelligence plays an important role in ensuring national security through drone technology used by both military personnel and public safety teams alike.

It’s no surprise then why countries like America are so adamant about gaining full control over their own defense systems rather than leaving it up to fate or other hostile forces outside their borders.

Although we must remain aware of potential threats posed by killer robots falling into wrong hands (and take steps towards preventing it), we must also recognize how essential these tools have become when it comes down defending ourselves from attack or disaster relief operations following natural disasters like storms or tornadoes.

Autonomous Weapons Explained

Autonomous weapons replace humans in the decision to use force. They are fundamentally dehumanizing and their development will have profound consequences for all of humanity. As technology rapidly develops, legal safeguards are not in place. Policy discussions on autonomous weapons need to address two key problems.

FOX News reports that tech mogul Elon Musk said this week that artificial intelligence will eventually become so advanced it will eliminate the need for humans to work, and revealed his own AI company is already making progress in the field.

“I think we are seeing the most disruptive force in history here,” Musk said during a sit-down with U.K. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak at the inaugural AI Safety Summit in London on Thursday.

“We will have for the first time something that is smarter than the smartest human,” Musk added.

Musk said, “It’s hard to say exactly what that moment is, but there will come a point where no job is needed.”

“You can have a job if you want to have a job — sort of personal satisfaction — but the AI will be able to do everything,” the billionaire Tesla CEO added.

Musk, who co-founded OpenAI but has since parted ways with the Microsoft-backed ChatGPT creator, has long been outspoken about the power AI could have in the future, raising concerns that the new technology could threaten humanity. He is a proponent of regulating AI, which he reiterated to Sunak during the question-and-answer session.

We are entering unchartered waters which has huge advantages but is also capable of ending life on earth as we know it.
