Ever notice that people who are normally smart, capable folks suddenly seem to flush all of their common sense and intelligence down the crapper the moment they become involved in government service?

Such seems to be the case for the Philadelphia City Council as these folks just voted to do something really, really stupid that puts people’s lives in danger.

They decided to create a bill that removes bulletproof glass from the windows of some small businesses,

Somwhere, Rocky Balboa is shaking his head in shame.

Fox News is reporting:

The council voted 14-3 to approve legislation that could eventually force business owners to remove the protective glass outside their storefronts that some lawmakers believe operate as drug fronts and facilitate loitering and public urination, Fox 29 reported.

The bill, which was passed by the city’s Public Health and Human Services Committee on Dec. 4, enables Philadelphia’s Department of Licenses and Inspections to regulate the bullet-resistant barricades that stand between customers and cash registers in many neighborhood corner stores.

The approved bill, according to, instructs the city’s Department of Licenses and Inspections to, by Jan. 1, 2021, “promulgate regulations to provide for the use or removal of any physical barrier” in stores that sell food and alcohol.

The approved bill “does not require mandatory removal” of the bulletproof glass, but rather a careful consideration, Councilwoman Helen Gym told The bill does, however, call for “tighter rules on seating, public restrooms and what can be sold at these stores,” Fox 29 reported.

Store owners responded with the following comments:

“I was the victim of a robbery when I was ten years old, and I don’t want that to happen again,” one storeowner told Fox 29.

Another shopkeeper, through an interpreter, said: “If you took the bulletproof glass from our store, there will be more people die.”

Councilwoman Cindy Bass, the main sponsor of this thing, also said that the reason she supports this bill is because she feels it hurts people dignity being served food though plexiglass.

Yes, she really said that.

Now, if these business owners are engaged in illegal activities, this move could still backfire and end up making things worse. What if individuals involved in the sale of drugs then go out and purchase guns — most likely illegally — to defend themselves with and shootings become a regular occurrence? Innocent people get caught in the crossfire and then you have a bigger mess on your hands.

Then there’s how this sort of legislation might impact other business owners who might have legitimate operations, a thought big government goons never seem to have when making up all these little rules.

More government intrusion is never usually the answer to these sort of issues. In fact, depending on how far libertarian one might lean, the fact government is involved in this whole drug thing at all is part of the problem.

Just imagine if marijuana was something that was legalized all across the country, destroying the black market that exists for this product? Chances are, violent crime related to the purchasing and distribution of marijuana would almost completely cease to exist.

Unfortunately, we live in a day and age where folks seem to want the government to act as their parent and help them decide what’s wrong, what’s right, and what’s healthy, rather than putting the time and effort into making those choices for themselves.
