Russian bombers, fighter jets fly near Alaska, prompting Air Force escort…

The military jets stopped the pair of Russian bombers and two fighter jets near the state of Alaska today.

Two Russian Bear bombers – or Tupolev Tu-95 – and a pair of Su-35 “Flanker” fighter jets first entered Alaska’s Air Defense Zone early this morning, US officials confirmed.

The Plane formation was swiftly detected by two US Air Force F-22 stealth fighter jets that were already airborne taking part in a patrol, Fox News reported.

The fighter jets were unarmed and remained in international airspace, Fox quoted officials as saying, but it was the first time the US Air Force has seen advanced Russian fighter jets escort Cold War bombers near Alaska.

A similar incident occurred last month, when US jets scrambled to escort two Russian bombers that had entered US airspace.

In April, Russian bombers flew very close to Alaska over four consecutive days for the first time since 2014.

Donald Trump had a “very good” conversation with Vladimir Putin, the Russian president, about a diplomatic resolution to the Syrian civil war, including the creation of safe zones, the White House said on Tuesday.

The White House said the conversation focused on crises in the Middle East and North Korea, with no mention of recent Russian provocations.

The two leaders held their first known phone discussion since last month’s US missile strikes against a Syrian government airbase soured relations between Washington and Moscow.

“President Trump and President Putin agreed that the suffering in Syria has gone on for far too long and that all parties must do all they can to end the violence,” a White House statement said. “The conversation was a very good one, and included the discussion of safe, or de-escalation, zones to achieve lasting peace for humanitarian and many other reasons.”

The US said it would be sending a representative to ceasefire talks in Astana, the capital of Kazakhstan, on Wednesday. Trump and Putin also discussed cooperation to “eradicate terrorism” throughout the Middle East and how best to resolve the “very dangerous” situation in North Korea.
