“U.S. Forces-Afghanistan confirmed Quari Tayib, once known as the Taliban Shadow Governor of Takhar Province, was killed in an airstrike in Archi District, Kunduz, Afghanistan on Apr. 17. The strike was part of ongoing efforts to deny Taliban freedom of movement in the area,” a statement by USFOR-A said.

According to USFOR-A, “Tayib had been a target-of-interest since 2001 and was directly responsible for the deaths of U.S. service members in Afghanistan.”

USFOR-A also added that “the strike targeted a compound Tayib owned and used for insurgents in the area. Eight additional Taliban fighters were killed in the strike.”

“U.S. Forces took every precaution to prevent civilian casualties. No other casualties or damage were associated with this strike,” the statement said.

The anti-government armed militant groups including the Taliban insurgents have not commented regarding the report so far.

The provincial police commandment in Kunduz confirmed the death of Quari Tayib last week but stated that he was the deputy shadow governor of the group for Takhar province.

According to The Guardian, Taliban shadow governors are responsible for directing insurgents fighting in Afghanistan. They work with more freedom in areas where Kabul does not have control. Two other Taliban shadow governors were killed in separate U.S. airstrikes earlier this year.

The announcement of the airstrike comes after Taliban militants killed more than 100 Afghanistan soldiers in a brazen attack Saturday. The gunmen dressed as soldiers and stormed a military compound. The attackers, in two separate military vehicles, had told guards at the gates that they were carrying wounded soldiers and therefore immediately needed to enter the site.
