Russian President Vladimir Putin has written President-elect Donald Trump a letter with “Christmas and New Year greetings” that also calls for strong bilateral cooperation in global affairs.

Dear Mr. Trump,

Please accept my warmest Christmas and New Year greetings

Serious global and regional challenges, which our countries have to face in recent years, show that the relations between Russia and the U.S. remain an important factor in ensuring stability and security of the modern world.

I hope that after you assume the position of the President of the United States of America we will be able – by acting in a constructive and pragmatic manner – to take real steps to restore the framework of bilateral cooperation in different areas as well as bring our level of collaboration on the international scene to a qualitatively new level.

Please accept my sincere wishes to you and your family of sound health, happiness, well-being, success and all the best.

Trump’s transition sent out the letter, quoting Trump as calling it a “very nice letter from Vladimir Putin” – on a day when he and Putin were engaging in long-distance rhetoric about a potential nuclear arms race.

He then added, “His thoughts are so correct. I hope both sides are able to live up to these thoughts, and we do not have to travel an alternative path.”

Trump raised the stakes on a potential new nuclear buildup Friday morning, telling MSNBC host Mika Brzezinski that he would welcome a costly new nuclear buildup if rival nations want to try to match the United States.

Scott Kelnhofer at Western Journalism reports that Putin said Friday that Trump’s comments about nuclear weapons were “nothing new.”

“During his election campaign, he said the U.S. needed to bolster nuclear capabilities and armed forces in general, and there is nothing new,” Putin said of Trump.

Adding to tensions between the countries in the past month have been allegations by Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton, President Obama and intelligence agencies within the U.S. government that Russia-sponsored hackers attempted to sway the recent presidential election in Trump’s favor.

Putin has continued to deny any involvement in hacking efforts related to the election and said Democrats are acting like “sore losers” by blaming their defeat on his country.
