Sean Brown AMERICA’S FREEDOM FIGHTERS –
A waitress had a group of officers sit down in her section, and as she was serving them, she noticed something didn’t seem exactly right about them. She ended up acting on her gut, and what she did left them blown away.
Occasionally it’s good to take a break from politics and focus on why we’re all fighting so hard to reverse the course our nation is headed down, and what happened at an Ohio burger joint is a great story to do so with.
Jessica Dunbar works at a Red Robin restaurant in Columbus, Ohio, and last week, a group of nine officers sat down to eat in her section, according to NBC4. As Dunbar served the officers, she sense something wasn’t quite right about them, and she was spot-on with her observation – they had just come from the funeral of one of their fallen brothers, SWAT Officer Steven Smith.
Dunbar overheard the heartbreaking reason they were all in tears that day, and she immediately knew she had to do something.
“It’s always a rough day when you’ve got to put a brother in the ground,” Dunbar recalls overhearing from the table.
At that point, she was reminded of her father, a retired police officer himself.
“He [Officer Smith] left behind a wife and kids,” she tells NBC 4. “It could’ve been me. It could’ve been my dad.”
The officers all finished their meals, which came to a total of $123. When Dunbar brought them their check, they were blown away at what they saw instead.
“Officers,” she wrote, “Your bill is on me today. I can’t imagine the day you all have had, let alone what you go through every day. I hope your days get better. So much respect. #WeSeeYou #PoliceLivesMatter #RIPOfficerSmith”
Yes, you read that correctly. Dunbar, who works for tips, picked up the entire $123 tab – which was likely more than she made her entire shift. But for her, it wasn’t so much about trying to cheer them up as it was paying respect to the men and women who put their lives on the line to keep us safe.
“People look up to them,” she says. “To have them shake my hand and say ‘thank you’ to me, that was incredible.”
According to Lt. Jeff Shelton from the Wellington Police Department, Dunbar’s extreme generosity really hit home with the officers that day.
“It really touched all of our hearts,” Wellington said. “We weren’t expecting to be treated any different than normal, and just for somebody to come and do that, it really made our day.”
