In a move that just demonstrated pure CLASS, Orlando Health and Florida Hospital have chosen to not bill the survivors of the Pulse nightclub terror attack for any out-of-pocket medical expense, according to an announcement on Wednesday from hospital officials.  The hospital has instead chosen to write off an estimated $5.5 million dollars in care and potential revenue.

“The pulse shooting was a horrendous tragedy for the victims, their families, and our entire community.  During this very trying time, many organizations, individuals, and charities have reached out to Orlando Health to show their support. This is simply our way of paying that kindness forward,” according to a statement from Orlando Health President and CEO David Strong to the Orlando Sentinel.

The main hospital – Orlando Regional Medical Center – treated 44 of the 50 victims who were left in dire need of immediate medical attention resulting from the terror attack on June 12 that killed 49 people.  Pulse Nightclub is located just a few blocks from this Level 1 trauma center. Of the 50 victims that needed medical attention, 9 of them died shortly after their arrival at ORMC.  One of those victims still currently remains hospitalized due to the seriousness of the injuries he sustained in the attack.

Orlando Health will bill health insurers for patients that have coverage but whatever is not covered by insurance will be written off by the hospital chain. Florida Hospital treated a dozen of the victims after the attack.  Officials made a statement that they will not even bill the victims’ insurance for treatment or for any additional follow-up surgeries or medical care they may need due to injuries they may have sustained in the attack. Naturally, survivors welcomed the news with much relief. Medical expenses at Florida Health exceed $525,000.

“It was incredible to see how our community came together in the wake of the senseless Pulse shooting. We hope this gesture can add to the heart and goodwill that defines Orlando,” said Daryl Tol, Florida Hospital’s president and CEO in a statement to the Orlando Sentinel.

The hospital system is truly demonstrating how to “love thy neighbor” and it’s truly wonderful to watch.  This is the sort of gesture that is rarely seen today and I would love seeing a lot more of.  People giving charitably to one another, not because the government forces them to via taxes, but because it’s the right thing to do and they are choosing to do so.
