The FBI was apparently desperately seeking dirt on then-candidate Trump, which is evident by the outrageous amount of money it offered to pay the author of the so-called “Russian dossier.

The dossier was compiled as opposition research by former British spy Christopher Steele, who started looking into President Trump in June of last summer. The FBI reportedly met with Steele in October of last year, and the offered a ridiculous amount of money if he was able to corroborate anything contained in the file, according to a New York Times report.

Mr. Steele met his F.B.I. contact in Rome in early October, bringing a stack of new intelligence reports. One, dated Sept. 14, said that Mr. Putin was facing “fallout” over his apparent involvement in the D.N.C. hack and was receiving “conflicting advice” on what to do.

The agent said that, if Mr. Steele could get solid corroboration of his reports, the F.B.I. would pay him $50,000 for his efforts, according to two people familiar with the offer. Ultimately, he was not paid.

It’s interesting that Mr. Steele was never paid for the file, considering that same file would be used about a month later to apply for a FISA warrant against Carter Page, who had been advising the Trump campaign – if the FBI didn’t find the information credible enough to pay Steele, then why did it then use it to run surveillance on an American citizen?

The FISA court would end up granting the warrant, which means that it felt there was probable cause to believe Page was a Russian operative. However, to date there’s been no evidence to corroborate any of the wild claims made in the dossier.

Regardless, the FBI must have been desperate to find something on the President if they were willing to pay out $50,000 for it.
