Alabama House Speaker Mac McCutcheon has called on Gov. Robert Bentley to resign from office immediately, days before impeachment proceedings into the governor’s alleged sex scandal are scheduled to begin.

“Let’s end this embarrassment to our state right now,” McCutcheon, also a Republican, said in a press conference held on Friday. “It’s the only way to avoid taking our state on a long, painful and embarrassing journey whose ending is likely already known to us all.”

Last year Bentley was reportedly caught cheating on his wife with a staffer via phone call recordings from 2014. Now, more evidence has apparently surfaced that has increased the demands for his removal from office by means of impeachment.

“I do not plan to resign,” Bentley said Friday morning from the steps of the state capitol. “I have done nothing illegal. If the people want to know if I misused state resources, the answer is simply no, I have not.”

“Exposing embarrassing details of my past personal life, as has happened in the past and as I’m told will happen again, will not create one single job, will not pass one budget, will not help one child get a good education, and will not help any child get good health care,” he said.

A report investigating possible grounds for impeachment documents the means by which Bentley allegedly went to keep his affair with adviser Rebekah Mason a secret, Western Journalism reports.

Michael McGrady at WJ reports that the Alabama House Judiciary Committee published the report, documenting all of the exhibits the state lawmakers are using to make the case Bentley must be impeached.

Notably, Bentley allegedly created an “atmosphere of intimidation” in his quest to silence anyone in regards to his relationship with Mason.

Bentley also is accused of using career law enforcement to intimidate people into keeping quiet about the affair, as well. He is also accused of using state resources for his personal use.

He allegedly maneuvered in this manner, according to the report, “in a process characterized by increasing obsession and paranoia.”

Reuters reports that Bentley attempted to block the report in court, but a judge allowed the release of evidence gathered by the state’s House of Representatives Judiciary Committee.

However, after the granting of a restraining order, Bentley has been given extra time to respond to allegations outlined in the report. The court order puts a hold on the hearing originally scheduled to begin Monday.

So it looks like the 74 year old Governor has a problem keeping it in his pants.

Not a bad problem to have if you ask me!
