Richard Sherman Has THIS To Say About Running For President And It’s Definitely Turning Heads…

It seems lately the news regarding politics is revolving around the NFL.  First Colon Kaepernick and his “sit-down for oppression” with his refusal to stand for the National Anthem at a 49s pre-season game. Now Richard Sherman of Seattle Seahawks fame is weighing in.  Lindsay Gibbs of Think Progress states that the Stanford graduate and Seattle Seahawks cornerback said that if he were elected to the White House, he would focus on getting America out of debt. Definitely, a worthy endeavor and something that needs to be addressed, but it gets better….

Sherman states, “I’d get us out of this deficit. I’d stop spending billions of taxpayer dollars on stadiums and probably get us out of debt and maybe make the billionaires who actually benefit from the stadiums pay for them. That kind of seems like a system that would work for me.”

Now I believe that “running for president” bid was said tongue in cheek but he raises valid points,  why should the public fund be used to build a stadium when that’s not what the people want?  Why shouldn’t the team owners finance their own stadiums? Never mind that the NFL itself enjoys “tax exempt” status but is then allowed to use tax dollars, then to pay out of the public coffers when you make millions on revenue generated from ticket sales and merchandise.  It’s a real slap in the face to the American people and Richard Sherman was right on target.

According to Think Progress and author Lindsay Gibbs –

Gibbs also says, “According to an analysis from the Public/Private Partnerships for Major League SportsFacilities, $12 billion in public funds were used for 51 new sports facilities between 2001 and 2010. ThinkProgress previously offered suggestions for what could be done with that money, such as finance all subsidies for public school lunches for an entire year, provide year-long methadone maintenance for over 2.5 million drug addicts, or fund a preschool education for every three and four-year-old under the poverty line.”

The Seahawks play at CenturyLink Field, where Sherman plays.  The stadium cost the people of Seattle $300 million in taxpayer money.  Yet team owner Paul Allen is the 45th richest man in the world. Taxpayers will not even finish paying this debt in full until 2021. It seems that very few stadiums attempt to do it differently either.

While a discussion about Sherman running for president is clearly a joke, his point about taxpayers being responsible for helping the wealthy get wealthier by means of theft isn’t funny.  If people want to build or rebuild a business to turn a better profit, then they should pay for it themselves, just like the middle class and poor have to do.
