Denouncing what they see as outside interference in the South China Sea and Korean Peninsula, the foreign ministers of Russia and China voiced mutual support Friday as they seek to counter the influence of Washington and its allies, particularly in Asia.

China and Russia have unified on their opposition of the THAAD system as well as strengthened their coordinated opposition to the THAAD missile system.

“Exhibiting a high likelihood of becoming volatile, counter-productiveness of the line being taken by certain governments in exacerbating these tensions and instigating an arms race in the subregion, as well as the increase in the scale of military drills.”~Moscow Ministry of Foreign Affairs

Following talks in Beijing, Russia’s Sergey Lavrov and China’s Wang Yi expressed opposition to the U.S. deployment of an anti-missile system in South Korea and said non-claimants should not take sides in the dispute over maritime territorial claims in the South China Sea.

The report gave no details and a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman on Friday said only that China has a legitimate right to defend its security interests. The proposed Terminal High-Altitude Area Defense, or THAAD, radar system aims to guard against North Korean missiles.

China has campaigned relentlessly against the deployment, warning of unspecified retaliation and prompting a sharp downturn in relations with Seoul. China says the powerful radar system can peer deep into its territory.

THAAD is an advanced system designed to intercept short, medium, and intermediate-range ballistic missiles during their terminal flight phase. Equipped with long-range radar, it is believed to be capable of intercepting North Korea’s intermediate-range ballistic missiles.

  1. Able to engage a wide class of ballistic missile threats in both the endo- and exo- atmosphere using proven hit-to-kill technology.
  2. Effective against all types of ballistic missile warheads including WMD’s.
  3. Designed to counter mass raids with its high firepower, up to 72 Interceptors per battery.
  4. Interoperable with other BMDS elements, working in concert with Patriot and PAC-3, Aegis, forward based sensors and the Command, Control, Battle Management and Communications to maximize integrated air and missile defense capabilities.

The U.S and South Korea have launched large scale war games this month due to the growing tensions in the region.
